Evolving Intellectual Property Rights Skills for Athletes

IPR-A 3rd Seminar

The IPR-A consortium is pleased to announce the successful completion of the third round of educational seminars in Greece, held as part of the project’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and build capacity on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) among athletes, coaches, and professionals in the field of sports.

This round featured two sessions that blended in-person engagement with online accessibility, ensuring inclusive participation and outreach.

The first seminar was held on Sunday, May 11th, 2025, at the premises of the Olympic Museum of Thessaloniki, in conjunction with the annual EGVE Conference -one of Greece’s most respected gatherings for physical education and sport sciences.

Attendees had the unique opportunity to explore IPR-related concepts in a historically rich and sports-focused venue, fostering an environment that encouraged both reflection and forward thinking. The session formed part of the broader EGVE programme and was well-attended by students, educators, and professionals from across the Greek sports community.

The second seminar took place online on Friday, May 16th, 2025, offering participants the flexibility to engage from different locations and further explore topics introduced during the in-person session. The online format also enabled broader access and ensured continuity in learning.

Across both sessions, participants gained valuable insights into:

  • The different types of Intellectual Property, including trademarks, patents, utility models, copyrights, and trade secrets.
  • The importance of IPR for athletes, especially in protecting their image, brand, and creations during and after their sports careers.
  • The international landscape of IPR protection, including key treaties such as the Berne Convention and institutions like WIPO, EPO, and EUIPO.
  • The national and international procedures for registering and defending intellectual property rights, with a focus on real-world applicability in the sports industry.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Greek Union of Physical Education Professors (EGVE) for their support and collaboration throughout the implementation of our activities. We are also deeply grateful to the Olympic Museum of Thessaloniki for graciously hosting our first seminar in such an inspiring setting. Most importantly, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants, whose enthusiasm and active engagement were key to the success of this seminar.

Their participation reinforces our shared mission to empower athletes and youth with the knowledge and tools to pursue sustainable and creative dual careers.
